You studied hard, passed the HSK, got your certificate — and now you're wondering: does it expire? The answer depends on what you're using it for, and the HSK 3.0 transition adds a new wrinkle. Here's what you need to know.
The Official Answer
According to Chinese Testing International (CTI), the organization that administers the HSK:
HSK scores are valid for 2 years from the test date for the purpose of university admission in China.
However, the certificate itself does not expire. It's a record of your achievement at that point in time. The 2-year validity applies specifically to using the score for applications — similar to how IELTS and TOEFL scores have a 2-year validity window.
Validity by Use Case
| Purpose | Validity Period | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese university admission | 2 years | Most universities strictly enforce this |
| CSC Scholarship application | 2 years | Score must be valid at application date |
| Job applications (China) | No strict limit | Employers may prefer recent scores |
| Job applications (international) | No strict limit | Certificate is proof of level achieved |
| CV / resume | Permanent | Always valid as an achievement record |
| Confucius Institute programs | 2 years | Same as university admission |
| Immigration / visa purposes | Varies by country | Check specific requirements |
| European university (CEFR equivalent) | Varies | Some accept any date; others want 2 years |
HSK 2.0 vs 3.0 Certificate Validity
This is the big question for 2026–2027:
Will my HSK 2.0 certificate still be accepted?
Yes — for now. Your HSK 2.0 certificate remains valid within its 2-year window. If you passed HSK 4 in March 2025, your score is valid until March 2027. Universities will still accept it for the 2027 application cycle.
However, starting from 2028 onwards, most institutions are expected to transition fully to HSK 3.0 requirements. If your HSK 2.0 certificate will expire before then, you may want to retake the exam under the new system.
Is HSK 4 (old) the same as HSK 4 (new)?
Not exactly. HSK 4 under the old system required 1,200 words. Under HSK 3.0, it requires 2,000 words. The level names are the same, but the standard is higher. Universities haven't yet clarified whether they'll adjust their minimum requirements when they transition to HSK 3.0 references. Our advice: aim for a strong score that leaves no doubt.
Planning Your Exam Timing
To maximize the usefulness of your HSK score, time your exam strategically:
| If You Need HSK For... | Recommended Exam Date | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CSC Scholarship 2027 (apply Jan–Mar) | Sep–Oct 2026 | Results in time for application + backup attempt in Dec |
| Chinese university Fall 2027 | Oct–Dec 2026 | Results by Jan–Feb 2027 for admission deadlines |
| Job in China (2026) | Jul–Sep 2026 | Have certificate ready for job hunting season |
| EU university recognition | Anytime | No strict validity for most EU institutions |

What If My Score Has Expired?
If your HSK score is older than 2 years and you need it for university admission or scholarship applications, you have two options:
- Retake the exam — If you've been using Chinese regularly, you'll likely score the same or higher. The new HSK 3.0 format may require some adjustment time.
- Contact the institution directly — Some universities make exceptions, especially if your score was strong and your Chinese language reference letters confirm ongoing proficiency.
Keeping Your Chinese Active After the Exam
The worst outcome is passing HSK 4, celebrating, then never touching Chinese again until you need it for an application — only to discover your level has dropped. Maintain your skills with minimal effort:
- 10 minutes/day of reading (news apps: 今日头条, 微信 articles)
- Listen to Chinese content while commuting (podcasts, music, audiobooks)
- Weekly vocabulary review (15 minutes of spaced repetition)
- Monthly conversation practice (language exchange partner or tutor)
