HSK vs CEFR: Complete Equivalence Guide 2026

If you're studying Chinese in Europe — or applying to a European university or employer that uses the CEFR — you need to know how your HSK level translates. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the standard benchmark for language proficiency in the EU, and the HSK-to-CEFR mapping has been updated with the HSK 3.0 transition.

This guide provides the official 2026 equivalence table, explains the nuances that official tables don't mention, and helps you choose the right certification for your situation.

New to HSK 3.0? The level structure has changed from 6 to 9 levels. Read our complete HSK 3.0 vs 2.0 guide for the full picture before diving into CEFR equivalences.

HSK 3.0 to CEFR Equivalence Table (2026)

HSK 3.0 Level Vocabulary CEFR Practical Description
HSK 1 300 words A1 Basic phrases: greetings, numbers, simple daily interactions
HSK 2 500 words A2 Simple conversations: shopping, directions, daily routines
HSK 3 1,000 words A2+/B1 Travel situations, basic opinions, short descriptions
HSK 4 2,000 words B1+/B2 Abstract topics, news articles, short essays, academic discussions
HSK 5 3,600 words B2/C1 Professional communication, literature, nuanced arguments
HSK 6 5,400 words C1 Near-fluent comprehension, formal writing, complex discussions
HSK 7 ~7,500 words C1+ Academic research, professional translation, sophisticated expression
HSK 8 ~9,000 words C2− Expert-level comprehension, editorial writing, interpretation
HSK 9 ~11,000 words C2 Near-native proficiency, academic publishing, simultaneous interpretation

The Honest Truth About HSK-CEFR Mapping

The table above is the official mapping. But here's what it doesn't tell you:

Chinese is harder to compare with CEFR than European languages

The CEFR was designed for European languages with shared alphabets, cognates, and grammar structures. Chinese has none of these:

  • No alphabet: Learning 1,100 characters for HSK 4 is vastly more work than learning French or Spanish at B1
  • No cognates: A French B1 learner can "guess" 30%+ of Italian or Spanish words. A Chinese B1 learner has zero free vocabulary from other languages
  • Tonal system: An entire layer of complexity that European languages don't have
  • Writing system: At HSK 5+, you need to handwrite characters — something no European language exam requires at this level

What this means in practice: HSK 4 is officially mapped to B1+/B2, but the amount of study time required is closer to what a European would need to reach B2/C1 in French or German. Keep this in mind when comparing with colleagues who speak European languages.

The productivity gap

At CEFR B2 in French, you can read a newspaper comfortably. At HSK 4 (the "B2 equivalent"), you can read a Chinese newspaper slowly, with dictionary support. The functional gap is real, and it's because of the character system.

Which Certification Do You Need?

Situation Required Level Notes
EU university admission (Chinese studies) HSK 4 / B1–B2 Varies by university and country
EU university admission (general, with Chinese) HSK 3–4 / A2+–B1 Often accepted as an additional qualification
Erasmus Mundus programs (China-related) HSK 4–5 / B2 Usually specified in program requirements
EU job applications (Chinese as bonus) HSK 3+ / B1+ Shows functional ability
EU job applications (Chinese as primary skill) HSK 5–6 / B2–C1 Translation, business development, diplomatic roles
CSC Scholarship HSK 4+ / B1+ CSC uses HSK directly, not CEFR
Confucius Institute teaching certificate HSK 5–6 / C1 Required for Chinese language teaching roles

CEFR Recognition in Key European Countries

Germany

German universities generally recognize HSK certificates. The KMK (Kultusministerkonferenz) mapping follows the official table above. HSK 4 is typically accepted as equivalent to B2 for Chinese language programs. Check with DAAD for scholarship requirements.

France

France uses HSK as the standard for Chinese proficiency. The Confucius Institutes in Paris, Lyon, and other cities administer HSK exams regularly. French universities typically require HSK 4 for Chinese-taught programs.

Poland

Growing interest in Chinese studies. Warsaw University's Confucius Institute is a key exam center. HSK certificates are recognized by the Polish education system. Students targeting Chinese business or diplomatic careers typically need HSK 5+.

Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria

HSK recognition is standard across Central European universities participating in the Belt and Road academic exchange programs. Prague and Budapest are the main exam centers for the region.

HSK vs Other Chinese Tests

HSK is not the only Chinese proficiency test, though it's by far the most widely recognized:

Test Equivalent to HSK When to Use
TOCFL (Taiwan) Similar levels but different content Studying/working in Taiwan
BCT (Business Chinese) Specialized business vocabulary Business roles specifically requiring Chinese
YCT (Youth Chinese Test) Below HSK levels, for young learners Students under 15
