TEF Canada and Express Entry: French Points vs Eligibility

Understand the difference between programme eligibility, 25 or 50 French additional CRS points and French-language category-based selection.

Checked 8 October 2026. Independent guidance from Lingullio.

A good French result can affect an Express Entry profile, but it does not guarantee permanent residence. Separate three questions: are you eligible for an Express Entry programme, how many CRS points does your profile receive, and do you meet the conditions of a particular invitation category?

These questions are related, but one number such as “NCLC 7” does not answer all three. This article explains the current French-language rules relevant to planning your test target; it does not assess your individual eligibility.

1. Programme eligibility comes first

Express Entry manages multiple programmes. Their language requirements can differ, including by occupation category. Before focusing on extra points, identify the programme you intend to qualify for and read all its requirements on IRCC.

French is only part of the profile. Work experience, education and other programme conditions still matter. A commercial preparation page should not turn a language result into a claim of guaranteed entry to the pool or guaranteed selection.

2. French additional CRS points have conditions

French-language additional CRS points in the current IRCC criteria
French results English results Additional points
NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills CLB 4 or lower in English, or no English test 25
NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills CLB 5 or higher in all four English skills 50

This is the additional-points component for French. It is not the total value of language in the CRS calculation, and it is not the separate Federal Skilled Worker selection grid. Use the full official CRS criteria or calculator for the complete profile.

Two examples that prevent common misreadings

Example A: a candidate has at least NCLC 7 in all four French skills and has not taken an English test. Under the French additional-points rule shown above, this is the 25-point scenario, not an automatic 50 points.

Example B: a candidate has three French skills at NCLC 8 and writing at NCLC 6. The three stronger results do not satisfy a condition requiring at least NCLC 7 in all four. The next study decision should investigate the writing gap, using task-specific writing practice and qualified feedback.

These examples describe language conditions only. Neither example establishes the person's full CRS score or immigration eligibility.

3. French-language category-based selection is another rule

IRCC lists French-language proficiency as a category for category-based invitations. Its language condition is at least NCLC 7 in every French skill, together with the requirements of the round. Candidates must also meet Express Entry eligibility requirements.

Meeting a category condition is not an invitation. Do not treat a previous round's cut-off, date or invitation count as a forecast for your application. Refer to the current instructions for each round and the current category page.

Turn the rules into a study target

  1. Write down the programme you are checking and link to its IRCC requirements.
  2. Record the language requirement in each skill.
  3. If French additional points are part of your plan, check both the French and English conditions.
  4. Read your TEF results using the correct reporting column.
  5. Identify the skill that is below the target and choose a feedback-based practice routine.

The NCLC 7 score guide explains the previous-score equivalency currently required for Express Entry. The preparation roadmap helps turn a language target into reading, listening, writing and speaking work.

Questions about the French route

Is NCLC 7 always enough?

It can satisfy a particular language condition, but “enough for permanent residence” depends on the programme, full profile and selection process. Higher results may change other points components. Use the full criteria, not a slogan.

Should I book TEF or TCF just to obtain more points?

First choose an accepted test that you can prepare for and take within your timeline. Compare TEF Canada and TCF Canada by tasks and logistics rather than assuming a bonus for one test name.

Can I use these rules for Quebec?

This article concerns Express Entry. Quebec has separate selection arrangements; consult the relevant Quebec authority for that pathway. Do not transfer this CRS table to a Quebec programme.

Does a beginner have a fixed timeline to NCLC 7?

No. Starting skills, practice quality, feedback and available time vary. Use repeated evidence of progress, not a promised number of weeks.
