TEF Canada vs TCF Canada: Choose by Tasks, Dates and Needs

Compare TEF Canada and TCF Canada through their task formats, local availability and your weakest skill, without claims that one is universally easier.

Checked 8 October 2026. Independent guidance from Lingullio.

Choose between TEF Canada and TCF Canada by trying the tasks and checking local availability. Both are accepted French tests for Express Entry. Comparing raw score percentages does not show which one is easier for you: the tests use different reporting and assessment systems.

This decision guide helps you choose a test to prepare for. It does not choose an immigration programme or claim that one test produces better chances of selection.

Compare the work you will actually do

Immigration test formats from the administering organisations
Skill TEF Canada TCF Canada
Reading 40 questions, 60 minutes 39 questions, 60 minutes
Listening 40 questions, 40 minutes 39 questions, 35 minutes
Writing Two sections, 60 minutes Three tasks, 60 minutes
Speaking Two role plays, 15 minutes Three tasks, 12 minutes including preparation time

The practical differences matter more than adding the question counts. For speaking, consider interaction, sustained argument and switching between tasks. For writing, consider the type of text and the amount of time you need to understand and fulfil a prompt.

Use a small, fair comparison

Lingullio decision exercise: use authorised examples from each provider. Pick a writing and a speaking task from each test. Try them on separate days under their stated conditions. Do not compare a familiar TEF task with a completely new TCF task and call the difference an aptitude test.

After each attempt, record:

  • Did I understand the situation and the purpose of the response?
  • Could I complete the task rather than merely speak or write about the topic?
  • Was the difficulty language, timing, organisation or the format?
  • What feedback would I need to improve?

Do not assign yourself an NCLC level from this exercise. It is a way to discover which format you can prepare for more deliberately.

If speaking is your main difficulty

TEF speaking asks you to obtain information and then persuade an interlocutor. TCF speaking uses three tasks, including an interview, an interaction task and expressing a viewpoint. Try the relevant task styles instead of relying on a claim that a prepared speech will work everywhere.

If you struggle to respond when another person interrupts, practising more monologues will not fully address that weakness. If you lose structure during a longer answer, shorter task transitions may feel different, but they still require language control. See the TEF speaking workshop for an interaction-based practice method.

If writing is your main difficulty

TEF writing includes continuing an article and developing a justified viewpoint. TCF writing has three tasks with their own length ranges and purposes. A strong conversational French level does not automatically mean that you can fulfil those instructions under time pressure.

Choose one original response to review, not a memorised model answer to reproduce. Assess whether it addresses the recipient, purpose and requested content. Our TEF writing workshop gives an example of that review process.

Compare two real appointments

Contact recognised centres and compare the same items: test version, components, date, result timeline, total price in the local currency, change conditions and travel. Session availability and fees are local. An online price from another city is not a quote for your centre.

A supposedly suitable test may be a poor practical choice if the earliest appointment misses your timeline. Equally, a convenient appointment is not useful if it leaves no realistic preparation time. Keep application deadlines and result validity separate from the test date.

A decision sheet you can reuse

  • Requirement: my programme accepts this exact test version.
  • Task fit: I tried the key productive tasks and know what needs work.
  • Learning access: I can obtain useful feedback, not only a question bank.
  • Appointment: I checked a real centre and the result timeline.
  • Budget: I included travel and possible changes, not just the headline fee.

Once these are clear, choose and practise consistently. Switching tests repeatedly can consume time without resolving the same underlying French-language problem.

Does one test give more immigration points?

The relevant variables are the accepted test results and resulting language levels under the programme's rules. Choosing a test brand is not itself an additional-points bonus. Read the Express Entry points guide and use the official calculator for your full profile.

Your next step

Once you have chosen the TEF, the TEF Canada registration checklist covers test centres, fees and booking.
